- Power on and check that it boots
- Screen: dead pixels, backlight, cracks
- Keyboard: every key, plus the trackpad
- Ports: USB, charging, audio, video
- Battery: health and charge time
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, camera and microphone
- Grade the cosmetic condition
